Post Nine: Dance?

What is this dance thing everyone's talking about now. I didn't think we had any lords here to throw balls.

[And she's not even going to ask about Morris dances....bad memories.]

Well witches are quite real where I'm from.

...Yes I am a witch. I'm the witch of my homeland, the Chalk. Which I'm sure you've never heard of.

...Oh. ...No, I haven't heard of it. But I bet you haven't heard of Indianapolis, either.

But... I actually think you're kind of cool. And fairy tales are only stories.

What's it like being a witch?

...no. I haven't. (Still doesn't like to admit that)
...I've been reading an atlas though...there are a great many places in this world.

[...cool?...er a compliment...?] Fairy tales are quite dangerous. Elves are not quite the same in stories as they are in real life.

I'm still in training, but it's interesting work. Hard work at times and rather frustrating. But it's what I am.

I haven't heard of everywhere in my world, and I -live- there. So don't feel bad.

There's a lot of weird places people are from here. But I guess where I'm from is weird compared to your home, huh?

Well, I still think it sounds cool. What sort of stuff do you do?

Yes, and they're rather nasty. They kidnapped my brother when I was younger. It took us a great deal of work to get him back.

I've mostly been learning about things and helping out around the house and village for the different witches teaching me.

I've helped give birth a few times and mostly people just call on a witch when they have a problem. Those are the normal duties of course.

They...kidnapped your brother? Elves? That...

I...don't know what I'd do if something happened to my brother...

I'm sure you'd think of something. I was only nine but I managed to get him back. With the help of the Feegles of course.

...What's a Feegle?

Very small blue men. There are a great many of them that live in my homeland. They tend to watch over me because I am the witch of the land. They helped me rescue my brother from the elves.

Oh. There's nothing like them where I live.

I have to do everything by myself. It's really difficult most of the time.

[Have a chuckle] Believe me, some of the times you'd be glad not to have them around.

They're quite....interesting I suppose is one word. Drunken thieving loonatics are some others. But they're quite nice sometimes....if they like you.

It sounds like it would be. Do you have much to do?

They get drunk? ....I don't want -anything- to do with them.

I don't have much, but what I have is =hard=. I have to take care of my little brother.

Most people don't. Though I'd be more worried about their theiving then their drinking.

[She misses them though....]

No parents?

People that drink are -dangerous-. [There's a phobia there, and her tone is insistent.]

Our mom drinks...that's why I have to take care of Alex. She's too busy getting drunk, passing out, or...doing...drunk...stuff....

I think they'd be dangous even if they didn't drink.
[She does note the tone though] They're kept in line though. So even if you were in my world you wouldn't have to worry about them. They're actually quite nice when you get to know them. (One of the few people who can say this)

Oh...I see. You must be very responsible then. [Approval is there.]

Well...I do my best.

...Some people around here don't think that's good enough, but...I do the best I can. It's been a lot of work making sure he's been taken care of, and making sure he'll be safe after I die.

Yeah...my 'sister' seems to think I'm not good enough to breathe just because I don't know the whole dictionary and then some.

But...it's not a matter of what I -want-. I hate being a prophet.

That's what my 'mother' says people like me are called. I...see the future.

Usually nasty things like people getting killed or dying in accidents.

I drown.

How do you drown, if you don't mind my asking.

Then avoid bridges.

It's not that easy. Trying to change the future just makes it more difficult...and it happens anyway.
